We hold regular play readings. This is partly for
entertainment and social interaction, and partly to 'test out' plays to see how
they are received by members and potential directors with a view to a future
production. They are a fun, informal evening. Come along and see if you like it,
you may get hooked!

It is envisaged that we shall be producing this in August with Corin Stuart directing.
Two is set in a pub and was originally performed by just two actors. It centres on a sqabbling landlord
and landlady but has a good variety of other characters. We do not expect to do it with just two people
so there are parts for all ages and genders.
- Tuesday 6th May 2008 : Racing Demon
-
A play reading of Racing
Demon by David Hare at 8pm on
Tuesday 6th May in the Church Hall (opposite Freshfield Hall) in Forest Row.
-
Synopsis - a team of clergymen struggle to make sense of
their mission in South London as the arrival of a zealous young curate
intensifies their personal and professional problems. It focuses on the
Church of England, and tackles issues such as gay ordination, and the
role of evangelism in inner-city communities.
Racing Demon is the first in his trilogy looking at British
institutions. As he states in his own book, Asking Around, his intention
wasn't to theorise but to portray the lives of individuals trying to
survive within them. He was amazed to find a group of inner-city
priests, who had given up on theology and were spending long hours (and
at salaries considerably below those of social workers or DHSS
officials) pouring as much love and practical help as they could into
"the vacuum created by society's indifference".
-
A fine play that was thoroughly enjoyed, with many
requests to read the later ones in the trilogy.
- Tuesday 8th January 2008 : The Gingerbread Lady
-
A play reading of The
Gingerbread Lady by Neil Simon at 8pm on
Tuesday 8th November in the booking office (in the main
entrance on the left at the foot of the stairs) in the Forest Row
Village Hall.
-
Review - Started out short of women to read but we
managed and some more turned up late. A powerful and serious play with
good dialogue and great laughs.
- Monday 26th November 2007 : Habeas Corpus
-
A play reading of Habeas
Corpus by Alan Bennett at 8pm on
Monday 26th November in the booking office (in the main
entrance on the left at the foot of the stairs) in the Forest Row
Village Hall.
-
Review - Lots of fun had by all. A hilarious,
beautifully written and gorgeously saucy cracker of a play. We all
agreed we should do it one day.

Maybe afterwards? In the pub? :-)
